Education backgrounds and skills obtained

Hey gang,

I just stumbled accross the GVCS a little while ago and I was fascinated, particularly be 3D printing/Fabrication.

I was wondering what is the normal education background/route one would take to get into the 3D printing industry as well as how to obtain the other general skills used in GVCS (welding, construction, gardening, etc).

I graduated with major in Political Science (AKA "the study of brutality") and I realized that I would like to learn things of actual productive value. As I'm particularly interested in 3D printing... I was debating between a few educational paths (doing CAD program at local community college, engineering at CC then moving on to engineering (mechanical vs materials vs etc ???).

As you can tell, I'm not quite sure what's the best way to go about getting into this. ANY words of wisdom would be much appreciated.

PS- what you guys are doing is SO COOL!

Permaculture Seedball Forest Gardening

A simple form of gardening,
even a child could do,
to sustain themselves,
on abundant and diverse produce.

Like to dedicate this thread to Masanobu Fukuoka who rediscovered seedballs and natural farming.

Might be a member of the Orion Priesthood as indicative of his neutral focus.

from ‘The Natural Way Of Farming’
“One never blames nature, but begins by blaming oneself. One searches
unrelentingly for a way to grow barley in the heart of nature. There is
no good or evil in nature. Natural farming admits to the existence
neither of insect pests nor of beneficial insects. If a pest outbreak
occurs, damaging the barley, one reflects that this was probably
triggered by some human mistake. Invariably, the cause lies in some
action by man; perhaps the barley was seeded too densely or a
beneficial fungus that attacks pests was killed, upsetting nature’s
balance. Thus, in natural farming, one always solves the problem by
reflecting on the mistake and returning as close to nature as possible.”

So it be the philosophy natural forest gardening.

Robert Hart from UK also has done forest gardening, but takes a more
laborious western approach using pruning and mulching. This video is
otherwise a good introduction to forest gardening.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBShBeC1f-Q

Forest gardening is perhaps the worlds best hope for a future.
Plants For A Future http://pfaf.org has a database of over 7,000 useful plants.
Many plants commonly considered “weeds” actually may be edible and have many uses.

Ken Fern founded PFAF.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zqt4zCeGMnk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IBT5odmZq0&NR

Seedballs are a natural way of planting seeds,
which is much simpler than tilling,
and more efficient than broadcasting.

As the bird or animal that eats some fruit,
mixes it with compost and clay,
and excretes a seedball,
so it is natural.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWyduWsoy8o

So have a go make a forest garden.
If you don’t have a plot, guerilla garden.

Get the seed and skills you need,
to sustain yourself and your family.
Healthy, happy, and abundantly appreciative.

Age Of Change

Planet
Collective is a social network of free thinkers. Our philosophy
explains how we can create and share enough resources for the human
race to become sustainable on this planet. If we consume less and share
more we can evolve past this static state of dependence. We can build a
resilient community where people communicate and share with each other,
strengthening relationships to accomplish great things together. We can
become resource sufficient and achieve a natural relationship between
the human race and planet earth. Before we can do this, we need to
evolve past our current state in society and learn to collaborate, as we
are all one family sharing one world.

We are currently making a documentary based around the apparent mutation
of human civilization. The film is a collective effort and we are
asking film makers from all over the world to contribute their time and
skills towards it. We are running a set of interviews and short films
with relative organizations over the coming year. All the footage will
be used in the documentary but we will also broadcast a series on Planet
TV which is our Internet TV channel, as the projects evolve.

Our film will be a live document for current and future generations to
study and will be made open source under a creative commons policy,
enabling anybody to use the film for educational purposes without a
price tag. Collectively recording a shift in our evolution, be it
physical, social, economic, ecological, spiritual, technological or a
mutation of the conscious, it is our belief that in a short period of
time we will experience the turning point of human civilization, the
majority of the worlds population of humans on the planet could either
divide and fall victim to an unnatural selection process of elimination
or unite and collectively create a resource sufficient, sustainable,
symbiotic, global community.

Our individual film makers have been given the task to make a short film
on an organization or outstanding individual, that they feel to be a
pioneering catalyst in the apparent shift. Then, collectively, we will
weave the fabric of each film together and create a tapestry to document
our Age Of Change.

We have chosen Sean Church, a Kansas based film maker, to film OSE this year.

Open Source Lathe (seems to be missing from this site sans description pointer)

It is mentioned in the project list and grouped with the Multi-machine, and Torch Table, but when going to that project's page, there is no mention of it at all, not even in the outline...

The Openfarmtech.org site does have pages for it at http://openfarmtech.org/index.php/Lathe, and after looking at those, I sincerely hope that that design is still open for discussion for safety's sake of whomever will end up building and trying to use such.

It may be more practical to build a specialized Multi-machine, just for lathe work, than to build that design as written, and certainly much safer to operate such, but the design as shown on the existing page looks like it was drawn up by someone who does CAD drafting well, but has never actually used a heavy-duty lathe, and that design as drawn will surely fly apart at high speed with fatal results to the operator and extensive property damage if one should ever put 20 hp in at the input shaft...

Please add it to the Flexible Industry Project list? Or is that something that anyone can do?

Thanks,

Allen

Venus Project Atlas Initiative Group

Hello!

I discovered your website while hunting for information. My name is Robert and I am the Admin for http://chapters.thezeitgeistmovement.com/nv/

I love some of the ideas I find on here and I have posted your site in our forums. Our chapter in particular has spawned another site called http://www.atlasinitiativegroup.org Our plan is to build the worlds first Resource Based Economy and CIty.

We have just begun only a month or two ago and already we are generating much interest. We are going to need all the help we can get. The forums of the first site I posted already has many topics of research and we are beginning to post information in each of them so that eventually we will have an in depth working model for each area needed to build and operate the city. We encourage everyone to contribute because the future belongs to all of us.

We have meetings almost weekly which you can listen in by phone. Its still small about 15 or 20 members right now but its growing! We are focusing on information gathering right now and we can always use help.

Thanks

Rob

RBEC In Unity

RBEC

www.RBECollective.com is a social network for free thinkers.

"We have our own TV & Radio channels broadcasting films,
documentaries, DJ mixes, chats and daily news streamed in from our
global community. You can create a profile and upload your music,
photos, art, literature and project ideas to share with the
collective. We have a video and instant messaging solution so you can
see who's available to chat online from around the world. We also
have a database of resources freely available for the human family.
You may watch a film, interact on a radio show and listen to some of
the best DJ mixes and musical performances from the worlds finest
talents."

Planet Productions has gathered a collective of people from around
the world, uniting resources, creating projects and in turn finding
solutions for obvious problems in the current society. Instead of
using money to trade resources, RBEC will introduce a gift economy.

"Our priorities are to survey what resources we have available to us
and share them amongst the collective, to create a new sustainable
society that is no longer reliant on the establishment and become
self sufficient through the symbiotic relationship of the human race
and planet earth."

To become a member you are required to offer your resources with no
monetary compensation. You may then share the common resources of the
collective to create your own project and build the community, or you
may contribute to the efforts of an existing project.

"We will provide solutions through education, working together and
harnessing what resources people have to offer, creating projects
that will benefit the human race as a whole, recognising diversity in
culture and climate, so we can tailor solutions accordingly."

Planet Productions plan to make a feature film, documenting the
journey of 'The Collective' in it's growth. The film will be
broadcast freely on Planet TV, their own internet based TV channel.

"We need unity in the human race for our species to survive. Social
division can only lead to self destruction. This is why we aim to
connect with all walks of life, no matter what social differences
divide us, unifying our strengths to empower our mission of
sustainability."

Join Planet Productions at the start of their journey and 'become the solution'.

www.rbecollective.com
