Mechanism for Project Collaboration using OSDR
Please comment on the mechanism I've described below. Please realize that I
have not addressed other stages, such as Business Proposals and Resource Maps.
I'd like to work out the design mechanism first before proceeding further.
I need your consensus.
Notice I start with an empirical model. Why?
To use existing technology before creating own empirical model is to obtain tunnel vision from a industrial context we do not wish to propagate. Some ideas may have long ago been discarded by the current industrial context for a reason invalid in the new OSE context. A shovel may not need re-inventing, but the hoe definitely did.

1-project lead assigned
2-Project Lead creates a forum with the following subjects:
"Project XXX Red Pages"
"Primary Empirical Model"
Project Lead creates the following Pages:
3-OSDR page for Project
4-Primary Empirical Model Page or Protoype Page
This will include:
Performance Calculations
Functional Diagram
5-Project's Status page
6-Project's Red Page
The Project Lead then:
7-Draw out a method to accomplish task that meets design requirements. Post on "Primary Empircal Model" under "Functional Diagram" heading.
8-Does Performance Calculations for Functional Drawing, and, if need be, edits the drawing for discovered issues.
9-Creates a parts list and builds a small empirical model as a test.
Project Lead then does Research on Current Designs with three goals in mind:
-looking for ideas for primary empirical model
-looking for professionals interested in contributing to OSE.
-attempt to collaborate on the choice of the first full size prototype.
the below will then begin to happen:
-the empirical model will be modified or discarded entirely;
-new collaborators may want to prove their own empirical models.
-if a new model out performs other models in:
a- it's fit into the OSGV,
b- it's sustainability,
c- it's technical peformance.
it should be selected over the other models for the first prototype.
Any argument should be decided by modeled demonstration and concenous should govern. When two methods are generally equal, the one with the best sustainability should be selected. Then one should be selected by a game of chance with odds equal to all parties.
10- When the project leader sees it is time, the Project Leader takes a vote, not from just the collaborators, but from the entire on site OSGV I's population for the best prototype.
11- After the best fit prototype is selected, the Project lead creates a new wiki page called
"Project XXX Protoype 1"
If needed, a new Project Leader is selected at any time by a vote of the entire onsite OSGV I's population.
I recommend that these votes be concenous votes and if one person(s) consistently hold up the vote with out showing past positive results, the person or person(s) maybe removed from the project.
Anyone at anytime can create a fork for their own solution for a given project, but this solution will not be funded by OSGV I and will be the sole financial responsibility of the new fork owner.
Equipment storage, tool useage, and materials will not be provided by OSGV I for the new fork.
If the new fork isn't cleared by unanimous OSGV I's vote, it will not be listed as an alternative fork on the OSE wiki. This is to maximize OSGV I's resources, not to stifle ideas. OSGV I encourages all new fork creators to obtain their own wiki website and follow the OSDR model there.

I think the first step before all this is to draw up a Resource Map. In particular, People Map. This will provide information on all the technical support - and it will generate the community. This way, future collaborators can be updated readily on who's involved, and they will know where they should go for help.
Perhaps. But who will make the Resource Map? The project lead? So maybe the resource map can be made after the project lead has been assigned?
Reasonable?
Whoever takes initiative is the project lead. To facilitate progress, the resource map should be created. Jeremy and I are working on a simple form that people can fill out as we invite others to the People Map.
Mathew said that anonymous range voting seems to work best when decisions need to be made.
-Jeremy
I don't know much about anonymous range voting. How do we keep one person from voting 50,000 times?
Maybe make it so that only logged in people can vote.
Props on the new website changes! A definite move toward being able to see the big picture -in my opinion.
Maybe someone can help me with a few questions since I'm a newb:
What does OSDR stand for, and where would OSDR pages be located?
Where would projects “red,” “prototype,” and “status” pages be located?
What would be included on the red page?
Users can now select different themes on the factorefarm.org site. It's to help make it more social friendly.
Open Source Design Rationale (OSDR) is basically to define what a product should be. There are several blog posts about it but I guess a wiki page hasn't been made to really define it further. http://openfarmtech.org/weblog/?s=design+rationale
Check out the product development strategy for more on the design rationale though: http://openfarmtech.org/index.php?title=Development_Strategy
Example design rationale page: http://openfarmtech.org/index.php?title=Sawmill_-_Design_Rationale
Most pages are just wiki pages, then they are put into a category with the tag: [[Category:(name)]] see an example here, and just edit the pages to see how the category is set: http://openfarmtech.org/index.php?title=Category:Pyrolysis_Oil
To make a wiki page just go to a page that doesn't exist on the wiki and you can start editing it.: http://openfarmtech.org/index.php?title=My_New_Page
It needs to be defined more clearly, but "Red pages" are where you have questions that stop a project and need to be answered before moving on.
