Cube Spawn

I just found out about this project (http://www.cubespawn.com/index.php/news/31-about-cubesspawn.html) through browsing around on Wikipedia's list of open source hardware page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open-source_hardware) and I think it may be work considering.  While this is a sort of production line, I think it could be used to take the mass customization paradigm to a new level of versatility.  Combine it with the modularity and design for disassembly and you could have a automated flexible fabrication system that would eliminate human efforts in some of the dangerous or tedeous parts of manufacturing.

I read the linked article, and I have to believe that CubeSpawn is intended as a way of *conceptualizing* the relationships between production processes, rather than as an intended method of building actual modular machines that can interact with each other in a universal framework.  
 
Simple thought-experiment: a bread-maker and its various inputs and outputs.  You can't just "connectorize" those at the boundary of a cube; if nothing else you have a bunch of different materials in, plus energy in, and waste heat out, plus the need to remove the finished bread and clean the machine.   There's no way to standardize those into a connector system that is inter-operable with other types of inputs & outputs.  
 
The CubeSpawn concept is cognitively enticing because it straddles the boundary between abstracted and concretized processes.  But that does not make it "practical" in the sense of something that can be committed to blueprints and built.  
 
By analogy, a song that feels "meaningful," even though the lyrics are simple: The "information" in the lyrics may not in itself constitute a roadmap for insight into whatever-it-is that is felt to be meaningful about it.  The "meaningfulness" is in the emotional state conveyed by the combination of melody, rhythm, intonation, etc.   "Meaning" in the cognitive/verbal sense, is different to "meaning" in the emotional/intuitive sense.
